A new £34million emergency unit at Stepping Hill Hospital has been nominated for a prestigious national award.
The Emergency and Urgent Care Campus is on the shortlist for the ‘Best Project Buildings: Social Infrastructure Project’ category at the British Construction Industry (BCI) Awards, which take place on October 8 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair.
Small and medium-sized businesses benefitted from 97% of the total budget, almost 90% of the workforce came from the local area, and 718 weeks of training were used by students from Trafford College.
The latter has already won the link-up an Investment in Skills Partnership award after it helped learners gain 13 T-Levels.
Michelle Waddicor, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust’s head of capital and estates, said: “We are thrilled the BCI has recognised the social value of this project, which showed what inclusive engagement should look like in construction.
“The collaboration, empathy and commitment shown by the [lead contractor] Tilbury Douglas team has left a lasting impression on the trust, the children and the wider community.”
Tilbury Douglas’s regional director for the North West, Martin Horne, said: “Being shortlisted for this prestigious BCI award is a testament to the strength of our partnership with Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and the commitment of everyone involved.
“From the outset, we aimed to deliver far more than just a building, this project has become a blueprint for how construction can drive meaningful social impact through local investment, skills development and community collaboration.”
Stepping Hill’s new unit – which opened in May after taking nearly three years to build – will face off against Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral, Durham Constabulary’s new Investigative Hub, EcoPark House in North London, the UK’s first all-electric prison HMP Millsike in East Yorkshire, and specialist fire safety lab Warringtonfire.
