Two football clubs are mourning the death of a talented player described as an “influential, bubbly character” after he was hit by a car on the M60.
Hyde United and Manchester Panthers led tributes to 15-year-old Israel Iyabor, who died at the scene on Sunday afternoon.
“The club is devastated to hear the tragic news that Israel Iyabor, a cherished member of our junior football family, has sadly passed away,” said a statement from Hyde United, where he played for the club’s under-15s.
“Israel was more than just a talented young footballer — he was an influential, bubbly character whose energy, smile, and love for the game lit up every training session and matchday.
“His coaches describe him as an absolute joy to coach and a privilege to watch on the pitch.
“Hyde United sends its deepest condolences to Israel’s family, friends, teammates, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He will be deeply missed by all at the club.
“Rest in peace, Israel.”
One of his youth team coaches at Hyde, Dan Bollington, said: “RIP ISRAEL – TOTALLY HEARTBROKEN to have lost one of our own in such tragic circumstances!
“Israel was a influential part of the Hyde United family and it was my honour to have coached and got to know him.
“A true heartbeat and popular member of the team, a true inspiration who had his whole life ahead of him. Never did anybody see what was to come.
“Gone but never to be forgotten, RIP Israel.”
A statement from Manchester Panthers, a junior club based in Moston that Israel was also on the books of, said: “Israel was a wonderful young man, a brilliant footballer, and a true friend to everyone at Manchester Panthers Junior Football Club.
“His kindness, his energy on the pitch, and his warm smile made him loved by all who knew him. He touched so many hearts with his friendship, his passion, and his joyful spirit.
“As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that heaven has gained a shining star. We believe he has been welcomed with open arms into a better place—a place where he can continue to shine as brightly as he did here with us.
“Israel, you will be forever missed but never forgotten. Thank you for the memories, the laughter, and the love you gave to all of us. Rest peacefully now—you’ll always have a place in our hearts.
“Fly high, Israel 99. Until we meet again.”
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just after 4.30pm (Sunday 20 July) fire crews were called to assist North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) with a concern for welfare on the M60 Anticlockwise junction 20 to 19.
“Two fire engines from Heywood and Broughton stations, as well as the technical response unit from Ashton were quickly mobilised to the scene.
“The thoughts of everyone at GMFRS are with the family and friends of the boy who sadly lost his life.”
