Hospital staff set £2,500 target for Kilimanjaro climb

Seven members of hospital staff are preparing to fly from Tameside to Tanzania to raise funds for a specialist care unit.

Mr Pardeep Arora, a consultant breast surgeon at Tameside Hospital, will tackle Mount Kilimanjaro alongside six of his colleagues next month.

The expedition to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain will take place from August 21-30, where the septet – which also includes colorectal surgeon Mr Mamoon Solkar – will scale the snow-capped 5,895m (19,341ft) peak.

“As a consultant surgeon, I see first-hand how vital it is to have the right tools, environment, and support in place for patients undergoing breast surgery,” Mr Arora said

“I’m climbing Kilimanjaro to help enhance our breast unit – to improve the experience for patients and ensure we can continue providing the best possible care.”

He has set a target of £2,500, with all money raised going towards upgrading equipment and support services for patients on the breast unit.

Emily Whelan, charity manager at the Tameside & Glossop NHS Charity, said: “We’re incredibly proud of Mr Arora and the team for taking on such a monumental challenge.

“Their commitment to improving patient care is inspiring, and we’re calling on our local community to get behind them with their support.”
