Aussie all-rounder Coby Fitzsimmons at Hyde Cricket Club

Coby’s ton can only be good for Hyde

Hyde kept their perfect start to the season going with a fluent 8-wicket home win against Timperley on Saturday.

Captain Andrew Jackson put the visitors into bat on a bright day, but it took until the end of the 14th over before Charlie Barnard claimed the first wicket, when Charlie Hewitt caught Jamie Matthews for 20.

Fellow opener Daniel Scholz was skittled by a Jackson throw while dashing for a risky second run in the next over to leave Timperley – who beat reigning champions Didsbury on the opening day – on 61-2.

Economical bowling from Barnard and new signing from Styal, Rabeel Ahmed, restricted the away side to sluggish progress, leaving them on 124-5 by the end of the 30th over.

Enter the star of last season, Luke Young, who prized open the floodgates and took a trio of wickets from just eight deliveries, with Timperley eventually staggering to 166 all out.

Hyde began their reply in uncertain fashion, with new wicket keeper Andrew Jones following up his duck against Bramhall last week by being clean bowled off Chris Page for just four runs.

Page also claimed the vital wicket of Young for 23, assisted by a Fred Vaughan-Hawkins catch.

However, Rian Maisuria and new Aussie all-rounder Coby Fitzsimmons soon settled at the crease, with the latter clubbing 11 sixes on his way to a flamboyant 106 not out from just 52 balls.

The partnership remained unbroken as Hyde cantered to 168-2, Fitzimmons capping the victory with an 18th boundary midway through the 23rd over.

The result leaves them 2nd in the nascent Cheshire County Cricket League table, level on points with Cheadle and Wilmslow-based side, Lindow.

Meanwhile, Hyde will travel to Worcestershire to take on Barnt Green in the 1st Round of the ECB National Club Championship after beating Eccleshall by 20 runs in the Preliminary Round 2 on Sunday.

The Staffordshire side close to field, with Jackson (50) and Young (48) top scoring for Hyde, with superb contributions from bowler James Chew (36) and Cheshire under-16 starlet Sam Crossland (32), who stepped up for his first team debut after impressing with the 2nd XI.

Chasing 240 for the win, the home side were all out for 219 despite an impressive knock of 69 from Sri Lankan spinner Murvin Abinash.
