Hyde United are searching for new manager after Nick Spooner unexpectedly resigned following Saturday’s madcap 3-3 draw at Hebburn Town.
Spooner leaves his role after three-and-a-half-years in the Tigers hotseat, taking over from ex-Stockport County boss Jim Gannon in February 2022 and steering them away from relegation during an inspired run-in.
His first full season at the helm included an appearance in the final qualifying round of the FA Cup, a 6-0 thumping of local rival Ashton United on New Year’s Day, and a 6th-place finish in the Northern Premier League (NPL).
The Tigers again missed out on the play-offs on the final day of the 2023/24 season with another 6th place, but picked up the Cheshire Senior Cup with a penalty shoot-out win over Crewe Alexandra.
A more inconsistent campaign saw Hyde claim 9th spot in 2024/25 and reach the final of the Manchester Premier Cup.
“It’s been an absolute privilege to manage this football club over the last number of years,” Spooner said in a statement.
“I’ve appreciated all the backing from the board and the supporters from the first minute. We have had some great times; however, it’s the right moment for me to step back and give the opportunity to someone else to take the team forward.
“I wish everyone at the football club all the best”.
The Hyde United board added: “…[W]e have reluctantly received the resignation of First Team Manager Nick Spooner with immediate effect.
“This news came as a shock to the board and Nick wanted to express his gratitude for being given the opportunity to manage the club in his first senior management role.
“The club regret that their tenure here has come to an end and would like to thank Nick and Gavin for all of their hard work over the past three and a half years and wish them all the best for the future in whatever comes next.
“They will always be welcomed back at the Project Solar Stadium.”
It is understood that 54-year-old Spooner – who played for the club in 2003 – was frustrated at losing centre-half Festus Arthur to National League North side Southport, with budget constraints making it difficult to shore up a defence that has shipped more goals than any other in the NPL this season.
At the other end of the pitch, though, only Stockton Town have scored more goals in the division than Hyde.
Gavin McCann also leaves his role as first team coach.
Hyde assistant manager Martin Coyne will take temporary charge, helped by goalkeeping coach Chris Shaw and club captain Jack Redshaw.
The Tigers host Leek Town on Tuesday night before Whitby Town visit Ewen Fields in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round on Saturday.
