Coyne minted as new Hyde United manager

Martin Coyne said it’s “an honour” to be named the new Hyde United boss after his appointment to the top job on Thursday night.

He acted as interim manager following the shock departure of Nick Spooner last month, winning three out of four games, including victories over Prescot Cables and Matlock Town in the FA Cup.

Four other candidates were interviewed for the role, with Coyne being given the nod in part because of the camaraderie he has already built with the squad.

Tigers chairman Steve Hartley said: “The board have been impressed with the response of the team and the fans in the interim period where we have progressed through two rounds of the FA Cup, losing only one league match and keeping three clean sheets.

“We wish them every success and are sure the supporters will give their support as always.”

Coyne, whose late father Ged was Hyde manager between October 1992 and November 1993, will be assisted by ex-Tigers midfielder Harry Bunn and goalkeeper coach Chris Shaw.

“I’m delighted,” he said. “It’s an honour to be named the first team manager of Hyde United, and we’ll carry on with the work we set out doing as the interim.

“It’s something he [Ged Coyne] would be very proud of, and I’m very proud to be following in his footsteps.

“It’s been a tough year, but ultimately, you’ve got to remain professional, you’ve got to do your job, and we’re going to go forward and everything we can to make it successful.

After setting up the club’s junior section, Coyne became part of the first team’s coaching staff during Darren Kelly’s tenure and saved praise for his former bosses in what is his first time in the managerial hotseat.

“I’ve had absolutely great mentors along the way, starting with Darren Kelly and TY [Dave McGurk], John McCombe, Gaz Prendergast, Jim Gannon, Gav McCann and Nick Spooner.

“I’ve taken so much on board from every single one of them and I owe a lot to them.”

Variety being the spice of life, Hyde’s next three games are in three different competitions, with a league fixture against Bamber Bridge next Tuesday sandwiched between this Saturday’s FA Trophy match against Warrington Town, and next weekend’s FA Cup trip to Tamworth.

“We’ll maintain what we’ve always said – one game at a time.

“The lads are brilliant and the dressing room spirit is unbelievable.”
